#BOTY2018: The Marvelous Mrs Maisel

I have a load of catching up to do! I was not kidding when I said my son was holding me hostage. Each time I was on my phone/laptop, he’d take it away from me and tell me to read the Bible. Yikes… maybe I am on my gadgets too much… *insert embarrassed face here*

So! This series wasn’t released in 2018, but in 2017, but it upstaged all my favourite shows in the Emmys this year, that I had to know what this series was all about. Well, I can safely say that, to me, it was worth the hype.

Amy Sherman-Palladino created, writes and directs. I love her. She’s also the one who created Gilmore Girls, which is a show I grew up on, so that was a plus already when I saw that. The story is simple really; it’s about a 50s Jewish housewife who’s supporting her husband’s stand-up career, and through a series of unfortunate events, realises that she, actually, is the funny one. So begins her journey to become a stand-up comedian.

Aside: hopefully it’s not a spoiler: I’m not sure how she didn’t see her potential for stand-up greatness, because the speech she made at their wedding was quite witty. She had it in her in the beginning. I guess those are the little nuggets that Sherman-Palladino gives us, so when the series starts moving in that direction, you’re like, “Well… obviously!!”

I personally loved the supporting cast way more than the main actor & actress. They really made it alive for me. They’re the true funny ones, that make this series a lot funnier than what you’d expect on paper. All I can say is, if you’re a fan of Gilmore girls, like period comedies, and are interested in a housewife in “housewife era” start a journey that is “anti-housewife” (dare I say…. feminist? *gasp*), you’ll have fun with this series.

Another aside: I learnt that one of Mrs Maisel’s inspirations, Red Foxx, aka John Elroy Sanford, the cantankerous old man of Sanford and Son, had quite the potty mouth back then.

So, what is your series of the year? Let me know in the comments, and let’s have a conversation!

Until next time… your Quarter Wife.
